Technology Reference Models

Technology Reference Model (TRM)

Key Considerations:

  • TRM provides a high-level map of the IT landscape. It could be used to analyse the current state or future state architecture.
  • Various heat-maps could be used to show the various aspects of the technologies e.g. Lifecycle, Cost, Complexity etc... Gartner TIME or any similar tool could be used to analyse the technologies and arrive at a tech strategy.
  • TRM is also used as a governance tool by the TDA to indicate the changes made by each project. Solution Architects can also leverage it to understand the technologies that they can use to meet the project requirements. TRM may optionally indicate standard technologies approved by the TDA.
  • TRM category names aligns with the technology language within the organisation and standardises them in case of confusion. It usually uses Capability to group various technologies.
  • The technologies are managed in a Repository tool to help build the right relationships with other entities (Capabilities, Applications etc..) and centralise the knowledge across the organisation
